Catalonia International invites a group of foreign journalists to the Tarragona Human Tower Competition
For years, the entity has been using this tradition as another element to explain Catalonia abroad
As part of the organization's international visitor program, Catalonia International has invited a group of foreign journalists this past weekend to experience first-hand one of the most unique and spectacular Catalan traditions: human towers, called "castells" (castles) in Catalan. It is a group of 8 correspondents based in Madrid, who work for media from the United Kingdom, Portugal, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia. During their stay, the journalists were able to learn details about the origin, values and importance of this centuries-old tradition in Catalonia.
The journalists visited the Human Tower Museum in Valls on Saturday accompanied by Joan Ibarra, member of the Board of the Association of Human Tower Teams and Tourism Councillor in Valls. Ibarra told them about the history, the meaning and other elements of human towers, including strong rivalries between teams such as in Valls. The journalists also met with the Catalan Minister of the European Union and Foreign Action, Jaume Duch; the Councillor for Tourism of the Tarragona City Council, Montse Adan; and the secretary general of Catalonia International, Laura Foraster i Lloret.
On Sunday, the correspondents attended the main day of the competition at the Tarraco Arena and were able to understand why many consider it the biggest human tower show in the world. Apart from seeing the constructions from very close and interviewing their protagonists, the correspondents also greeted and spoke briefly with the president of the Catalan Government, Salvador Illa. After a contentious end, the team from Vilafranca were declared winners of the 29th edition of the Tarragona Human Tower Competition.
