Sports and politics, the main topics of the international digital conversation about Catalonia in 2025

Catalonia International publishes the report on the nearly half a million mentions recorded last year

Since 2019, Catalonia International has been monitoring the international digital conversation about Catalonia on social media and other open digital platforms. The monitoring also includes mentions of the member institutions of the Consortium. The company Nethodology was commissioned to produce the annual report for 2025 [PDF in Catalan], as well as the specific quarterly reports published throughout last year. The distinguishing feature of the quarterly reports is that they exclude mentions related to politics and sports to give greater visibility to other topics and to the member institutions of Catalonia International.

These reports are based on tracking specific keywords in preselected languages. Although the scope of the monitoring is global, a more detailed analysis of conversations about Catalonia is conducted in the following countries: United States, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Morocco, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland.

Among the main conclusions of the 2025 annual report are the following:

  • The conversation about Catalonia in 2025 reached 449,600 mentions, 116,000 unique authors and a potential audience of 498.4 million people. 57% of the content volume corresponds to digital news, 41% was generated on X (formerly Twitter), and the remaining 2% comes from online forums.
  • 60% of the topics of conversation are linked to politics or sports.
  • The predominant (71%) overall tone of the conversation is neutral.
  • Portugal is the country where Catalonia and the member entities of Catalonia International were most discussed (13.40%), according to the ratio of mention volume to total population, followed by Argentina (10.70%), Belgium, France and Switzerland. In absolute terms, without taking the ratio into account, the top five countries were the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Argentina and Mexico.
  • The main conversation peaks -that is, topics that generated a high volume of discussion over a short period of time- were the following: the Formula 1 Catalan Grand Prix; the acquittal of Dani Alves; reactions to Pedro Sánchez's announcement recognizing Palestine; and the football match between Catalonia and Palestine.
  • Regarding the topics with the highest overall volume of conversation -those discussed throughout the year- major motor racing and cycling competitions ranked first, followed by scientific discoveries led or co-led by Catalan universities. In third place were references to the Government of Catalonia in relation to its social measures, infrastructure investment and tourism and cultural promotion. It should be noted that mentions of FC Barcelona are only counted when the conversation has some connection to Catalonia, and not when it relates solely to sporting results.
  • Some of the topics linked to the member entities of Catalonia International that stood out most in 2025 include delays in the renovation works at FC Barcelona's Camp Nou; the positive reception of Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week and the promotion of Catalan cuisine by the Government of Catalonia; and complaints filed by students against a University of Barcelona (UB) professor for sexual abuse.
  • The profiles that speak about Catalonia with the greatest reach - that is, those with the largest number of followers - are international media outlets such as the BBC, The Economist and Forbes magazine.
