A travelling exhibition commemorates the 40th anniversary of Catalonia's accession to the EU
"Europe, our common space" will be on display from tomorrow in Tarragona and has already scheduled dates in Reus, Girona and Lleida
On 1 January 1986, the third enlargement of the European Union took place, with the accession of Spain and Portugal. Catalonia, with a deeply rooted pro-European tradition, clearly supported Spain's accession. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of this milestone, Catalonia International has adapted and expanded the exhibition "Europe, our common space", originally created by Barcelona's Provincial Council, and will present it from tomorrow, Tuesday, at the Harbour of Tarragona. The official opening of the exhibition will be carried out by the Catalan Minister for European Union and Foreign Action, Jaume Duch, on 4 May, coinciding with the early celebration of Europe Day in the city.
The exhibition aims to highlight the importance of the European Union's activities and values, especially at the local level, since this is often where European policies are implemented and have an impact. It is estimated that 70% of European legislation ultimately has repercussions at the local level. Visitors can discover what it means to be part of the European Union and how to feel involved, with direct messages aimed at younger audiences. They can also see through concrete examples how EU membership helps guarantee their freedoms and quality of life.
Divided into an introductory section, five main areas (More connected; More empowered; More sustainable; More social; and More supportive) and a final section, the exhibition has an interactive format and includes activities that encourage public participation. Each of the five main sections includes an example of a European project carried out by a municipality in Catalonia, an interactive panel and a game.
After Tarragona, the exhibition "Europe, our common space" will be shown in Reus from 5 to 31 May, in Girona from 1 June to 31 July, and in Lleida from 15 September. It is also planned to travel to the Val d'Aran and to other towns interested in hosting it. A second version of the exhibition, slightly reduced and with the texts translated into Spanish and English, will be showed at the Catalan Government Delegation to the EU in Brussels between 6 May and 18 September.
