Europe Day Celebration in Tarragona
Organized by Catalonia International with the participation of the Minister for European Union and Foreign Action and the Mayor of Tarragona, among other authorities
The early celebration of Europe Day (9 May) took place this midday in Tarragona with a series of events organized by Catalonia International in collaboration with the Government of Catalonia, Tarragona City Council, the Harbour of Tarragona and Europe Direct Tarragona. These events served to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Catalonia's accession to the European Union and the National Day of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (3 May).
The first to arrive were around one hundred students from occupational therapy workshops in Tarragona, who took part in various activities and visited an exhibition created by themselves, right next to the exhibition "Europe, Our Common Space." This was followed by the institutional ceremony, featuring speeches by Santiago Castellà, president of the Harbour of Tarragona; Sergi Barrera, head of the European Parliament Office in Barcelona; two of the aforementioned students; Rubén Viñuales, Mayor of Tarragona; and Jaume Duch, Minister for European Union and Foreign Action of the Government of Catalonia. Laura Foraster i Lloret, Director-General of Catalonia International, welcomed attendees and spoke about the need to uphold the values of Europeanism today. The event concluded with a performance of the European anthem by DJ Abadia.
To conclude, Jaume Duch, Minister for European Union and Foreign Action of the Government of Catalonia, opened the travelling exhibition prepared by Catalonia International to commemorate the 40 years since accession to the EU. It is an adaptation of an original exhibition by the Barcelona Provincial Council, aimed at raising awareness of the importance of the European Union's work and values, especially at the local level.
