Diplocat launches a working group to internationalize Catalonia's municipalities

It will deal with subjects such as depopulation, territorial balance and energy transition, sports tourism and other tourism models, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

The working group for the internationalization of the local world of the Public Diplomacy Council of Catalonia (Diplocat) has met for the first time today in Barcelona. Managers and elected members of all municipal entities belonging to Diplocat took part in the meeting: the city and provincial councils of Barcelona, Tarragona, Girona and Lleida, the Catalan Association of Municipalities and Counties, and the Federation of Municipalities of Catalonia.

Laura Foraster, secretary general of Diplocat, welcomed the attendees and encouraged them to work together in promoting the international values and assets of the Catalan municipalities. Participants praised the initiative and emphasized that this is one of the few meeting place for Catalan municipal entities.

This first constituent meeting has laid the foundations for the Plan for the Internationalization of the Municipalities 2020-2022, based on the work that had already been done in bilateral meetings. Now a period of 15 days opens for contributions, so that the Plan can be closed during April. Among the topics that Diplocat will promote internationally are depopulation, territorial balance and energy transition, sports tourism and other tourism models, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Cases of good practice and models and tools of good governance will also be analyzed. The working group will also rethink the international relations model of Catalan municipalities, as well as training needs, evaluation mechanisms and communication strategies.

The working group that has been formed today will meet twice a year before Diplocat’s plenary meetings and work together on those activities focused at the local world.
